How to Compress Images for Websites
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and an unnecessarily large photo can slow a page down noticeably, especially on mobile connections.
Match the image size to where it is used
A photo displayed at 600 pixels wide on a page does not need to be uploaded at 4000 pixels wide. Resizing to roughly the display size, before any further compression, is the most effective single step.
Pick the right format
Photographs generally compress best as JPG; graphics with flat colours or text compress best as PNG; and formats like WEBP can produce smaller files than either for the same visual quality, where your site supports them.
Balance quality against size
Most compression settings are a slider between file size and visual quality. There is rarely a need for maximum quality on a web image u2014 a moderate setting is usually indistinguishable to visitors while cutting the file size substantially.
